Proverbs 23:35 Meaning They Hit Me

“They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don’t feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I can find another.”

What does Proverbs 23:35 mean?

There is a state so deep in unconsciousness that the blows no longer register. You are struck and feel nothing, harmed and cannot name the harm, because you have left the present moment entirely and live inside the compulsion.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a state so deep in unconsciousness that the blows no longer register. You are struck and feel nothing, harmed and cannot name the harm, because you have left the present moment entirely and live inside the compulsion. Something in you stirs and asks when it will awaken, yet the old craving pulls you back before the question can take root.

That returning is not weakness of will. It is the pain-body feeding on more of itself. The moment you become aware of the craving as it arises, instead of being lost in it, you are no longer wholly in its grip, and the pattern begins to lose its power over you.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Whatever a man returns to the morning after it wounded him is the need he trusts nothing else to meet.

Pain is the feedback that teaches a nervous system anything, so a vehicle whose real product is the removal of pain takes the teaching with it. The need being served is certainty: relief that arrives on schedule, asks nothing, and will be there again tomorrow.

Belief that relief lives in one place sets the state, the state sets the craving, the craving sets the hand reaching, and the reaching becomes the architecture of a life. Certainty met this way is a need of the personality served by a vehicle that bills a man without ever showing him the bill, while growth and contribution go untouched. The cost is that consequences lose their power to teach, so tomorrow arrives with nothing in it he has not already lived.

  1. The next time your hand reaches for your phone without a reason, stop halfway and feel the restlessness underneath. Stay with the feeling for ten seconds before you decide anything.
  2. Tell one person something honest about a pattern of yours that keeps repeating. Saying it out loud to a real face pulls it out of the fog.
  3. When the day has been hard and the usual escape is calling, name it quietly to yourself as it arrives: here it is again. Named, it has less grip than it had a second ago.

What do you keep going back to, and what are you hoping it will finally fix?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism

Craving is called the thirst that drinks salt water. Each return promises relief and deepens the need, and the whole cycle runs on not seeing it clearly.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

It describes desire as smoke covering fire, obscuring the clarity that was always there. The way out is not force, it is seeing the smoke as smoke.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that the gap between the impression and your response is the whole of your freedom. Act on the pull immediately and the gap closes.
