Proverbs 26:1 Meaning Like Snow in Summer

Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.

What does Proverbs 26:1 mean?

There is a part of the mind that clings to the belief in separation and calls it wisdom, and to honor that part is to reward the very thing that keeps the mind asleep. It is as out of place as snow in the heat of summer, because fear can never earn what belongs to love, and dressing the ego in glory only confirms the mistake.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a part of the mind that clings to the belief in separation and calls it wisdom, and to honor that part is to reward the very thing that keeps the mind asleep. It is as out of place as snow in the heat of summer, because fear can never earn what belongs to love, and dressing the ego in glory only confirms the mistake.

The folly here is not a person but a way of thinking, the conviction that guilt is real and attack is justified. To crown it is to feed it, and the mind that does so wonders why its peace never lasts. Honor is native to the truth in the mind, and set anywhere else it simply cannot hold.

Snow: honor given to what cannot receive it, beautiful in its season and destructive out of it, a gift that undoes the ground it falls on. Harvest: the mind's time of gathering, when what it valued comes due, spoiled when fear is what it chose to prize.

  1. Catch the thought today that feels sharpest and most justified, the one where you are clearly right about someone. Let it be unimpressive to you for a minute instead of brilliant.
  2. When someone tells you a story about how they got back at a person, you do not have to admire it. Stay warm with them without applauding the part that was fear.
  3. In a tense exchange at work, the clever cutting line will arrive fully formed. Let it pass unsaid. Giving it no stage is how it loses its grip.

Which of my own thoughts have I been quietly rewarding?

Tao Te Ching 29

Things have their own season, and forcing them out of it ruins them. What is set where it does not belong cannot hold, no matter how fine it looks.

Stoicism · Epictetus

If you prize what is not actually good, you will be rewarded with exactly what you prized. The value you assign is what comes due.

Zen

A teacher who praises a student's cleverness often ends up with a clever student and no awakening. What you honor is what grows.
