Proverbs 26:15 Meaning The Sluggard Buries His Hand

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

What does Proverbs 26:15 mean?

A mind can hold peace within reach and still find its acceptance too heavy a task. The healing is already near, folded close against it, yet the small willingness to receive it feels like too much, and so the gift stays unlifted.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind can hold peace within reach and still find its acceptance too heavy a task. The healing is already near, folded close against it, yet the small willingness to receive it feels like too much, and so the gift stays unlifted. What was offered freely goes untaken, not for want of nearness but for want of the one motion that would draw it in.

The correction is to make that little effort the mind calls too great. Love asks almost nothing, only the reaching that carries what is already held to where it can feed, and the reluctance to complete it is the last defense of fear. What heals is the tiny willingness to close a distance the mind itself invented.

Hand: the mind's power to receive, held close yet left unused when even a small willingness feels too great Bosom: the nearness of peace the mind keeps hidden against itself, close enough to hold but not to accept Mouth: the place of true nourishment the mind will not lift the offered gift to reach

  1. Do the one small thing you have been treating as too much, the five minute walk, the glass of water, the ten minutes of quiet. The size of the effort is not the size of the resistance.
  2. Accept a kindness someone has already offered you instead of waving it off. Say yes to the ride, the help, the meal, and let it land.
  3. In the thick of a hard day, take the thirty seconds you keep telling yourself you cannot spare. Step outside, breathe, let your shoulders drop, then go back in.

What good thing is already within reach that I have not bothered to pick up?

You do not need to go out to know. What is sought is found by staying still, because it was never at a distance.

Sufism · Rumi

You wander from room to room hunting for the diamond that is already on your necklace. The distance is not real, only unreached.

Zen

It is like a hungry person standing in front of food, waiting. The meal was never withheld. Only the hand did not move.
