Proverbs 27:10 Meaning Don’t Forsake Your Friend and Your Father’s

Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster. A neighbor who is near is better than a distant brother.

What does Proverbs 27:10 mean?

Nearness here is not measured in bodies or in distance across a room. What is near is whatever mind will meet you in your fear without adding to it, and what is far is any relationship the ego keeps at a safe remove so nothing can be truly shared.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Nearness here is not measured in bodies or in distance across a room. What is near is whatever mind will meet you in your fear without adding to it, and what is far is any relationship the ego keeps at a safe remove so nothing can be truly shared. The calamity is only the moment the mind believes itself alone and abandoned.

A mind in that moment reaches past the ones it has kept distant and toward the one already beside it, the presence that never left. Help was never far away. It waits wherever a mind is willing to be seen as it is and loved anyway.

Friend: the steady companion within the mind, love that has stayed close through every fearful season. Brother: another mind seen as separate and held at a distance the ego calls safety. Neighbour: the nearer presence of love, always beside the mind and asking only to be turned toward.

Live Proverbs 27:10 today

  1. Text the friend you have been meaning to text for a month. One honest line about how you actually are, not a thumbs up.
  2. When something goes wrong today, tell the person already beside you instead of carrying it alone until you have it tidy.
  3. When someone reaches out in a bad week, answer the same day, even briefly. Being reachable is most of being close.

Who is already near you that you keep forgetting to turn toward?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

He wrote that the friend you keep only for good weather was never a friend. Nearness is proved by who stays when things go badly.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

The sages said to acquire a companion for yourself, because no one carries their life alone. Closeness is built in ordinary days, not summoned in a crisis.

Buddhism

Good company is not a small part of the path, it is most of it. The ones who sit with your fear without adding to it are the near ones.
