Proverbs 27:5 Meaning Better Is Open Rebuke Than Hidden Love

Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

What does Proverbs 27:5 mean?

Love that hides itself is not yet fully love, for concealment belongs to fear, and whatever a mind keeps secret it has judged unsafe to bring into the light. An affection held back, unspoken and guarded, protects the ego's caution more than it serves the one it claims to cherish.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Love that hides itself is not yet fully love, for concealment belongs to fear, and whatever a mind keeps secret it has judged unsafe to bring into the light. An affection held back, unspoken and guarded, protects the ego's caution more than it serves the one it claims to cherish.

An open correction, freely spoken, can carry more love than this careful silence, because it treats a brother as strong enough to hear the truth. Real love does not hide. It brings everything into the open where it can be seen and healed, trusting that nothing true needs protection, and that only what is unreal fears the light.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

The mind's goal-striving mechanism steers the way a torpedo does, by picking up clear signals and correcting course. Honest correction spoken to a person's face is one of those signals. It shows where the aim has drifted, and the success mechanism puts it to work, feeding a sharper picture back into the self-image. A man told plainly that he is off target can adjust and move.

Warmth that stays hidden gives that mechanism nothing. Someone may hold you in high regard and never say so, and their fondness, however deep, never reaches the place where the picture is formed. It cannot guide. What is brought into the open changes a person; what is kept back leaves him steering blind.

Live Proverbs 27:5 today

  1. Think of the kind thing you have thought about someone for weeks and never said. Text it today, plainly, without softening it into a joke.
  2. If someone close to you is heading somewhere that worries you, say it once, gently, to their face. Treat them as strong enough to hear it.
  3. In the next meeting where you disagree and say nothing, speak the honest sentence instead. Keeping quiet is not the same as keeping peace.

What are you holding back that would help someone if you simply said it out loud?

If someone is wrong, teach them kindly and show them plainly. Silent disapproval helps no one and only protects the comfort of the one keeping quiet.

The wound is the place where the light enters. A friend who opens it honestly serves you better than one who keeps the bandage pretty.

The sages taught that whoever can protest a wrong and stays silent shares in it. Care that will not speak is not yet care.
