The rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor who has understanding sees through him.

What does Proverbs 28:11 mean?

The ego is always wise in its own eyes, certain that the store it has gathered proves its worth and its safety. A mind puffed with this private cleverness cannot examine itself, for it has already declared the verdict in its own favor and asks no further questions.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego is always wise in its own eyes, certain that the store it has gathered proves its worth and its safety. A mind puffed with this private cleverness cannot examine itself, for it has already declared the verdict in its own favor and asks no further questions. Its riches are the very thing that blinds it.

A quieter part of the mind, one that seems to own little but truly understands, sees straight through the display. It is not fooled by the show of self-importance, because understanding looks past what is gathered to what is real. Where love is the teacher, the mind can gently see through its own pretense and stop mistaking accumulation for wisdom.

The rich man: the ego heaped with its own gathered proofs of worth, so satisfied with itself that it cannot look within The poor that hath understanding: the quiet part of the mind that owns little yet sees clearly, seeing straight through the ego's display to what is real

  1. Say out loud, to yourself, one thing you have been acting certain about and do not actually know. Let the admission stand for a minute without fixing it.
  2. Ask the quietest person in the meeting what they think, and then actually take it in. The person with the least to prove often sees the thing everyone else is talking over.
  3. When someone corrects you in front of others and your face goes hot, say thank you and mean it. The urge to defend the display is the display.
