Proverbs 28:16 Meaning A Tyrannical Ruler Lacks Judgment

A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment. One who hates ill-gotten gain will have long days.

What does Proverbs 28:16 mean?

A ruler without understanding oppresses precisely because he lacks it, and the same holds within: fear governs the mind only where love has not yet been let in to teach. Oppression is not strength but blindness in power, a part of the mind pressing down on the rest because it cannot see, and what it cannot see it tries to control.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A ruler without understanding oppresses precisely because he lacks it, and the same holds within: fear governs the mind only where love has not yet been let in to teach. Oppression is not strength but blindness in power, a part of the mind pressing down on the rest because it cannot see, and what it cannot see it tries to control.

To turn from grasping is to loosen the whole machinery of that fear. The mind that no longer covets has stopped believing it lacks, and a mind that knows itself full has nothing to defend and no one to press down. Its days are lengthened not as a prize but because peace, unlike fear, does not exhaust the mind that holds it.

Live Proverbs 28:16 today

  1. Look at one thing you have been pushing hard to control today and ask whether you are pushing because you cannot see clearly yet. Sitting with the not knowing for an hour is often better than forcing it now.
  2. When you want someone to do something your way, explain the why instead of leaning on the pressure you have available. Offer the understanding you want them to act from.
  3. In the middle of a tense day, when the wanting gets loud, say to yourself that you already have what you need for the next ten minutes. Then do just the next ten minutes, unhurried.

Where am I pressing down on something because I am afraid of what I cannot see?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The best leader works so quietly that people believe they did it themselves. Force is what a ruler reaches for when understanding has run out.

Buddhism

Grasping is the root of suffering, not because wanting is shameful but because it is built on the belief that you are missing something. Set the belief down and the grasp opens on its own.

Stoicism · Seneca

It is not the person with little who is poor, but the person who wants more. Enough is a decision made inside, never a number reached outside.
