Proverbs 30:20 Meaning So Is the Way of an Adulterous

So is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

What does Proverbs 30:20 mean?

A mind convinced of its own lack turns from love to feed on what the world seems to offer, then hides the taking. The wiping of the mouth is denial, the small gesture by which guilt is pushed out of sight so it need not be looked at, and the claim that follows, that no wickedness was done, is the ego's refusal to see what it believes it did.

Christian Psychology

A mind convinced of its own lack turns from love to feed on what the world seems to offer, then hides the taking. The wiping of the mouth is denial, the small gesture by which guilt is pushed out of sight so it need not be looked at, and the claim that follows, that no wickedness was done, is the ego's refusal to see what it believes it did. Yet what is hidden cannot be healed, and guilt kept in the dark only waits to be thrown outward at someone else.

The adultery here is simply the choice to seek fullness anywhere but in the Love that is already whole. Its correction is the willingness to look, without fear, at what the mind thinks it has done, and to find there nothing that a change of teacher cannot quietly undo.

Adulterous woman: the mind that has turned from its Source to look for wholeness in the world, mistaking separation for satisfaction Mouth: the body's hunger and the place where the taking is covered over, the image of an appetite that feeds and then denies it ever fed

  1. Think of the small thing you have been not-thinking-about, the text you left unanswered, the thing you said about someone, the money you spent. Sit with it for one minute without explaining yourself.
  2. Tell one person one true thing you have been smoothing over. Not a confession scene, just "hey, I was short with you yesterday and I know it."
  3. When you catch yourself mid-justification, in the group chat, in the email draft, in your head on the drive home, stop the sentence. The urge to prove you did nothing wrong is the tell.

Tao Te Ching 71

To know you do not know is sound. To hide what you do not know, and call it knowledge, is the sickness. Owning the gap is where health begins.

Buddhism · the second arrow

The first arrow is the thing you did. The second is the whole apparatus of denial and self-attack you build around it. Only one of the two is still in your hands.

Judaism · teshuvah

The turning back begins with saying the thing out loud, plainly, without softening it. Nothing covered can be set right, and nothing named stays heavy for long.
