Proverbs 30:21 Meaning For Three Things the Earth Trembles

For three things the earth trembles, and under four, it can’t bear up:

What does Proverbs 30:21 mean?

When a mind sits in judgment it draws up a list of conditions it cannot tolerate, and calls its own unrest the fault of the world outside. What trembles here is not the ground but the perception that reads certain arrangements as unbearable, as if peace depended on things staying in their appointed order.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When a mind sits in judgment it draws up a list of conditions it cannot tolerate, and calls its own unrest the fault of the world outside. What trembles here is not the ground but the perception that reads certain arrangements as unbearable, as if peace depended on things staying in their appointed order. The disquiet was never in the earth. It was in the one who looked and decided that some part of what it saw could not be forgiven.

A mind at war catalogs its grievances and believes the catalog is real. The correction is to see that nothing outside has the power to unsettle a mind that has not first chosen fear as its teacher.

Earth: the mind's field of perception, the ground it stands on that seems to shake only because the one standing has judged what it sees

Live Proverbs 30:21 today

  1. Pick the one thing today you have decided you cannot stand. Write it down in a few words, then write what it actually costs you. Usually the gap is enormous.
  2. In the next conversation where someone does the thing that always gets you, let the silence sit for three seconds before you answer. That pause is the whole practice.
  3. In traffic or a slow line or a meeting that will not end, say to yourself: this is not unbearable, I am only calling it unbearable. See whether your shoulders drop.

If my peace depends on things staying in order, how often am I actually at peace?

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not events that disturb people, but their opinions about events. Change the opinion and the disturbance has nowhere to stand.

Zen

When the mind is still, the world is still. The flag does not move the wind.

Tao Te Ching 8

Water does not argue with the shape of the ground. It takes the low place and stays clear, while the one who insists on his own order grows muddy.
