Proverbs 5:16 Meaning Should Your Springs Overflow in the Streets

Should your springs overflow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares?

What does Proverbs 5:16 mean?

Love kept private begins to feel like scarcity, and the mind that clutches its peace soon fears to lose it. What has been found within is meant to overflow, to run outward into every encounter as gentleness and welcome.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Love kept private begins to feel like scarcity, and the mind that clutches its peace soon fears to lose it. What has been found within is meant to overflow, to run outward into every encounter as gentleness and welcome. Giving is how the mind keeps what it has, for what flows out is not spent but multiplied, and the one who pours becomes the one who is filled.

A mind afraid to share its peace still believes peace can be used up. The one who lets it run freely learns that the source only deepens as it gives.

Fountains: the inner wells of love the mind has uncovered, made to pour outward rather than be sealed and guarded Streets: the shared world of relationships and passing encounters, the open ground where the mind meets others and love is meant to run

Live Proverbs 5:16 today

  1. Send one message today with no purpose except warmth, no ask, no follow-up needed. A quick "I was thinking about you" to someone you have not talked to in a while.
  2. Give the person in front of you more patience than the situation requires, the slow cashier, the driver who cut in, the coworker asking the same question again. Watch what it does to your own mood.
  3. On a day when you feel short on everything, time, energy, goodwill, do one small generous thing anyway. Let someone merge, hold the door, say the kind version. The scarcity was never real.

Where am I guarding something that only grows when I give it away?

Tao Te Ching 81

The sage gives without holding back and is never emptied. What is poured out returns, because giving is how the source stays open.

Buddhism · Metta practice

The practice begins with kindness for yourself and then widens, to one person, to a few, to everyone, with nothing held in reserve. The warmth grows by being extended, not by being saved.

Judaism · Hasidic saying

A lamp loses nothing by lighting another lamp. The fear that kindness runs out is a mistake about how kindness works.
