Proverbs 6:1 Meaning My Son

My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger,

What does Proverbs 6:1 mean?

To bind oneself to another's fear is to take on a debt that was never real, and the mind does this whenever it makes another's guilt its own to carry. Pledging one's hand to a stranger is the mind entangling itself in the ego's affairs, agreeing to answer for illusions and secure what has no substance.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To bind oneself to another's fear is to take on a debt that was never real, and the mind does this whenever it makes another's guilt its own to carry. Pledging one's hand to a stranger is the mind entangling itself in the ego's affairs, agreeing to answer for illusions and secure what has no substance. This is a bargain struck in fear, a promise to uphold the very separation that binds.

Seeing the entanglement before it tightens is the whole mercy here. A mind that has not yet given its word can still withhold it and stay free.

Friend: the neighboring mind whose fear one is tempted to shoulder, the other for whose imagined guilt the mind wrongly makes itself responsible Stranger: the ego and its unreal claims, the foreign voice to which the mind pledges itself when it agrees to guarantee what has no truth Hand: the mind's power of decision and commitment, the faculty by which it binds itself, given in pledge when it takes on another's fear

Live Proverbs 6:1 today

  1. Before you say yes to the next thing today, wait an hour. Ask whether you actually want to do it or whether you are just trying to make someone else's worry stop.
  2. If a friend is spiraling about something in a group chat, be kind without adopting the panic. You can care about them without agreeing to fix the whole situation.
  3. When a meeting ends with a task quietly landing on you that is not yours, say so in the moment. Something simple like, I can help, but this one sits with someone else.

What am I about to agree to carry that is not actually mine?

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are yours to carry and some are not. Peace comes from knowing exactly which is which, and refusing the weight that was never assigned to you.

Bhagavad Gita

Act where action belongs to you, and let go of what the outcome does with it. Taking on results that are not yours to control is how a free person ties themselves up.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The useless tree is left standing while the useful one is cut down. Make yourself the guarantor of everyone's business and you will be spent on business that was never real.
