Proverbs 7:17 Meaning I Have Perfumed My Bed with Myrrh

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

What does Proverbs 7:17 mean?

Now the appeal reaches the senses, for temptation does not stop at what the eye can see but perfumes the very air so the mind is surrounded, its judgment softened before it can think. Myrrh, aloes, cinnamon: sweetness upon sweetness, the ego's way of making separation feel like something the whole self longs toward.

Fragrance persuades where argument cannot.

This is lack made lovely to breathe. A mind wrapped in so pleasant a cloud can still ask what it is being drawn into, for the sweetness in the air changes nothing about the bed beneath it, which remains a place that gives no rest.

Bed: the resting place of the ego's choice, separation dressed and scented to seem like the thing the mind most wants Myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon: the sweetness temptation adds to soften judgment, fragrance laid over emptiness to persuade where reason cannot

  1. When a show, a feed, or a snack has you comfortable enough to stop thinking, pause and ask whether you actually want another hour of this. The comfort is not the same as a yes.
  2. Over dinner or coffee with someone, when the mood is so warm that you are about to agree to something you have doubts about, say the doubt out loud anyway. Good company can hold it.
  3. Under pressure, when everything around a decision is engineered to feel nice, the music, the room, the free lunch, look only at the terms. Pleasantness is not a term.

What have I said yes to because it felt good in the moment rather than because it was right?

Tao Te Ching 12

The five flavors dull the tongue and racing after pleasure scatters the mind. Too much sweetness leaves you less able to taste anything.

Buddhism

Pleasant feeling is not the enemy, but following wherever it leads is. The sweetness is information, not instruction.

Stoicism · Seneca

Pleasure that comes on strongest right before the choice is the one to watch. Ask where it ends, not how it begins.
