Proverbs 9:8 Meaning Don’t Reprove a Scoffer

Don’t reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise person, and he will love you.

What does Proverbs 9:8 mean?

The difference between the scorner and the wise man is not in the correction offered but in the teacher each hears it with. A mind still learning from fear meets every appraisal as attack, and hates whoever seems to threaten its defense.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The difference between the scorner and the wise man is not in the correction offered but in the teacher each hears it with. A mind still learning from fear meets every appraisal as attack, and hates whoever seems to threaten its defense. A mind that has turned toward love receives the same words as help, because it no longer guards a self it once thought fragile.

Correction changes nothing outside; it only asks which teacher is listening. Where love answers, the same word that would have wounded becomes a gift, and the giver is met with gratitude.

Scorner: the mind identified with the ego, so committed to its own defense that any word arrives as an assault to be repelled Wise man: the mind that has accepted the teacher of love and can receive correction as help, having nothing left to protect

  1. Think of the last piece of feedback that stung. Read it again today without arguing back in your head, and see if there is one true thing in it.
  2. Ask one person you trust what you are missing, and then just say thank you. No explaining, no context, no version of the story where you were right.
  3. When someone criticizes you in front of others today, breathe before you answer. The heat you feel is not the comment, it is the part of you bracing for it.

What would I be able to hear if I did not have to defend myself?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus wrote that if someone shows you that you are wrong, change gladly, because the truth was never your enemy. Only pride turns help into an insult.

Zen · beginner's mind

Suzuki said that in the beginner's mind there are many possibilities and in the expert's there are few. A mind with nothing to defend has room to hear.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot 4

Who is wise? The one who learns from every person. Wisdom is measured by what you can receive, not by what you already hold.
