Psalms 139:7 Meaning Where Could I Go From Your Spirit

Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence?

What does Psalms 139:7 mean?

You cannot travel away from presence, because presence is not somewhere else. It is the awareness that is looking through your eyes right now, closer to you than your own thoughts.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You cannot travel away from presence, because presence is not somewhere else. It is the awareness that is looking through your eyes right now, closer to you than your own thoughts. Wherever you go, here you are; whenever you arrive, it is always now. There is no doorway out of this moment.

People spend their lives trying to flee the present, escaping into memory, into worry, into the endless commentary of the mind. Yet the very awareness they are running from is what makes the running possible. You can lose yourself in thought, but you cannot leave the living presence that you are, because it goes wherever you go.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The spirit being sought is not somewhere to travel to but the very awareness doing the seeking, the presence already underlying every state a person can enter. No direction leads away from it because it is the field in which all directions appear, the consciousness beneath every high and low the self can reach. The whole restless motion of trying to escape only proves the thing cannot be left, for the one fleeing is made of what he flees. This is the I AM standing beneath waking and sleeping alike, present in the depths of the body and the heights of the mind at once.

What sounds like a question about hiding places is the discovery that a person's own awareness has no edge he could step outside of.

SUFISM

Sufism

The question sounds like a search for an exit, and behind it hides the wish to have a private room where God is not looking, a corner for the appetite or the grudge no one supervises. That wish is the fault, and it fails on its own terms, because there is nowhere the searching light does not already reach.

The cure is to stop running and turn the running into welcome, to live as if watched by someone who loves the watching. A fish cannot flee the sea it swims in. The presence a person tries to escape is the very water holding him up.

Live Psalms 139:7 today

  1. When you reach for your phone out of restlessness, pause with your hand on it and feel that you are standing here, breathing, right now. Then decide whether you still want it.
  2. On a walk or a commute with someone, let a silence sit for a whole minute without filling it. You will feel yourself arrive in the moment you stop talking your way out of it.
  3. In a hard meeting or a tense call, when your mind starts planning its exit, feel your feet on the floor instead. Stay in the room you are already in.

What are you hoping to be somewhere else from today?

Zen

Wherever you stand, that is the whole of it. There is no secret place away from here, and no later that is not another now.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The awareness that lets you see is nearer to you than your own breath. You cannot search for it, because it is the one doing the searching.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

People run to the coast and the hills to get away from themselves, when they could simply turn inward at any moment. Nothing is actually escaped by moving.
