Psalms 3:5 Meaning I Laid Myself Down and Slept

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for Yahweh sustains me.

What does Psalms 3:5 mean?

Each night you lie down and release your hold on everything. You surrender the day, the worries, the endless planning of the mind, and you fall into sleep, a small death of the person you take yourself to be.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Each night you lie down and release your hold on everything. You surrender the day, the worries, the endless planning of the mind, and you fall into sleep, a small death of the person you take yourself to be. You do nothing to keep yourself alive in that darkness.

And yet you wake. Something deeper than your thinking self carried you through the night, the same living presence that beats your heart without your effort. When you trust that you are held by this, rest becomes surrender, and you awaken knowing that life itself sustained you while you let go.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A man ringed by enemies who sleeps is a man whose grip has loosened at last. All night the frightened part wants to stay on watch, running the danger over and over, as if worry were the thing keeping him alive. Sleep comes only when he hands the whole matter to a deeper support and lets it work without him. That support does the carrying while his effort goes quiet.

He wakes, and the waking is the proof. Something steadied him through the dark that his own straining never had to manage. When a person trusts the ground beneath him, the muscles of the mind unclench and rest arrives on its own. The strength that held him was never his to hold up.

Live Psalms 3:5 today

  1. Tonight, put the phone across the room and lie down without reviewing the day or planning tomorrow. Feel the weight of your body on the bed and let the floor of the world hold you.
  2. When someone tells you they cannot sleep for worrying, do not hand them a solution. Sit with them a minute and let them hear that nothing is required of them right now.
  3. When you wake up and the dread arrives before your feet hit the floor, feel your breath first. You did not keep yourself alive last night by worrying, and you will not have to today either.

What am I still holding at night that was never mine to carry?

Water does not strive, and it reaches everywhere. The life that holds you works the same way, without your management.

When tired, sleep. The whole of practice can fit inside lying down and letting go.
