Psalms 3:6 Meaning I Will Not Be Afraid of Tens

I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people who have set themselves against me on every side.

What does Psalms 3:6 mean?

Fear is a picture before it is a feeling. A man counts the faces ranged against him, ten thousand of them closing in on every side, and the sum of them decides how small he feels.

Cybernetics

Fear is a picture before it is a feeling. A man counts the faces ranged against him, ten thousand of them closing in on every side, and the sum of them decides how small he feels. What the picture does not measure is the man himself. When the inner portrait a person carries stays whole, the crowd cannot enlarge itself inside him, however wide it spreads.

The enemies here do not vanish. They stand where they stood, encircling. What changes is that their number has stopped setting the size of the one they surround. A steadiness held on the inside answers a threat spread on the outside, and the ten thousand shrink to what they are, faces, while the man keeps his own measure.

  1. When the comments or the group chat turn against something you said, count how much you actually changed. The number of voices is not the weight of the argument.
  2. If one person speaks over you in a meeting and the rest go quiet, keep your own measure of what you brought. Their silence is not a verdict on you.
  3. In the hour when the inbox, the deadline, and the family text all land at once, say out loud how many things there really are. Crowds feel infinite until you count them.

When you feel small, is it the size of what you are facing, or the size you have agreed to be?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Nothing outside you can shrink you unless you agree to it. The harm lives in your estimate of the thing, not the thing.

Tao Te Ching 33

To know yourself is the real clarity, and to master yourself is the real strength. That measure does not change when the crowd grows.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The one settled in himself is not shaken by what comes at him from outside. The waves move; the depth does not.
