Psalms 51:7 Meaning Purify Me with Hyssop

Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

What does Psalms 51:7 mean?

A man caught in his own wrong cannot scrub himself clean by wanting to badly enough. The hyssop is a small plant held in another's hand, and that is the whole confession: the cleansing comes from outside the one who is dirty.

Sufism

A man caught in his own wrong cannot scrub himself clean by wanting to badly enough. The hyssop is a small plant held in another's hand, and that is the whole confession: the cleansing comes from outside the one who is dirty. The cure begins where his pride ends, in admitting he needs washing at all.

Snow does not manufacture its own whiteness; it takes it from the light falling on it. So the heart that asks to be made whiter than snow is asking to become a clean surface that can hold the brightness of the One who cleans it. The stain was his. The whiteness, when it comes, will be a gift shining through him.

  1. Stop the project you have been fixing by force for a week and admit, out loud and alone, that you cannot do this one on your own. Then stay in the quiet for a minute instead of reaching for your phone.
  2. Ask someone for the help you have been working around: the ride, the loan, the honest read on your work. Let them actually give it without immediately offering something back.
  3. When the pressure is on and your first instinct is to grit harder, loosen your shoulders and say that you are out of your depth here. Then do the next small thing, and let whatever help arrives arrive.

What are you trying to fix in yourself that you would do better to hand over?

The sea is king of all streams because it lies lower than they do. Taking the low place is how anything comes to you, and insisting you are full keeps you dry.

Those who cannot carry themselves are carried. The whole turn is giving up on your own strength and letting yourself be held.

The mirror shines by taking the light, not by making it. Your work is to be a clean surface, not a source.
