Revelation 1:9 · World English Bible

Revelation 1:9 Meaning I John

I John, your brother and partner with you in the oppression, Kingdom, and perseverance in Christ Jesus, was on the isle that is called Patmos because of God’s Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

What does Revelation 1:9 mean?

Isolation is the necessary ground of inner vision. Patmos is the island, the state of a person set apart from the crowd and turned wholly within, where the outer world falls away and the sea of the subconscious surrounds him on every side.

Esoteric

Isolation is the necessary ground of inner vision. Patmos is the island, the state of a person set apart from the crowd and turned wholly within, where the outer world falls away and the sea of the subconscious surrounds him on every side. Only in this cut-off stillness does the higher revelation open. The tribulation and the patience are the pressures and the long endurance of the inner work, the tension a person holds while the awakening ripens. The one who sees is any consciousness withdrawn far enough from the noise of the senses to receive what rises from within. The seer is the person alone on the island of his own being, and the visions come because he is finally still.

John: the awakened consciousness within a person, the seer turned inward Patmos: the island of isolation, the mind set apart from the crowd and surrounded by the sea of the subconscious The isle: the state of withdrawal from the senses where inner revelation can open

Live Revelation 1:9 today

  1. Take ten minutes alone today with no screen, no music, no podcast. Walk the block or sit in the car. The boredom you feel in the first few minutes is part of it.
  2. Leave one conversation or group chat unanswered for an hour on purpose, not out of coldness but to see what you actually think before everyone else tells you.
  3. When the pressure builds at work, step outside or into a quiet room for two minutes. Not to escape it, just to hear yourself under it before you answer.

When was the last time you were alone with nothing playing?

Tao Te Ching

Empty yourself of the crowd's noise and things settle on their own. The clearest seeing comes from the quietest place.

Buddhism

The Buddha sat alone under a tree, through heat and fear and long boredom, and what he understood came out of staying put rather than out of searching.

Christian desert fathers

A young monk asked for a word, and the old man told him to go sit in his cell, because the cell itself would teach him everything.
