Revelation 1:8 Meaning I Am the Alpha and the Omega

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

What does Revelation 1:8 mean?

To be the beginning and the ending is to be what time cannot contain, the timeless presence from which all things arise and into which they return. What was, what is, and what is to come are not three separate realities.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To be the beginning and the ending is to be what time cannot contain, the timeless presence from which all things arise and into which they return. What was, what is, and what is to come are not three separate realities. They are movements within one eternal Now.

The mind lives in past and future and so misses this completely. But when you step out of thought into presence, you meet the changeless Being that was here before the first form and remains when the last has gone. Eternity is not a long time waiting ahead of you. It is the depth of this present moment, always here.

ESOTERIC

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters, the whole alphabet held in 2 marks, and they name the single awareness that contains every state a person passes through. Beginning and ending are not 2 ends of a line but one presence underlying birth and death, the I AM that stands beneath every changing thought. What is, what was, and what is to come are the 3 tenses of a mind in time, and all 3 rest on one changeless consciousness that never enters time at all. This is the deathless self that watches every phase of the life it wears.

The Almighty is not a ruler on a throne but the ground of being within a person, the awareness that was before the story and remains after it.

Alpha and Omega: the first and last letters of the alphabet, the whole range of expression gathered into the single self that holds every state The beginning and the ending: birth and death as 2 faces of one unbroken awareness that itself neither begins nor ends

To speak as the beginning and the ending is to name the frame that holds every story a person can tell. Whatever chaos rises in the middle, the first letter and the last already stand outside it. The voice that owns both was there before the confusion and remains after it drowns. Ancient peoples pictured the alternative as Leviathan, the serpent that swallows its own tail, the primal chaos out of which forms briefly emerge and into which they collapse again.

One claim stands against that devouring circle. The pattern that is, that was, and that is coming does not consume its own creations. It underwrites them. A man who trusts that the frame will hold can walk into his own uncertainty without being swallowed. The alpha and the omega mean the story has an author who never loses the thread.

SUFISM

Sufism

He is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward: nothing falls outside God The Quran names God with these four at once, and Sufis return to the line constantly. Dread of the future rests on a quiet assumption: the far end of time is unclaimed ground, open to whoever gets there first. The four names close that gap, and a person stops scanning the horizon for who is in charge out there.

Setting apart what has always been from what began in time: only one thing never started The early teacher Junayd put the heart of God's oneness in those words. Everything a person leans on has a start date, including bodies, cities, and the empires that look permanent from underneath. Sorting what began from what never did keeps a person from expecting forever out of something built last century.

Al-Ḥaqq: The Truth, what stands on its own Ibn Arabi uses this name for God more than any other. Everything else is propped up by something: a body by food, a house by the ground, a person by the people around them. Every support anyone can name is itself being held up, and only one thing at the bottom is not.

Tajdīd al-khalq: Creation made new at every moment Ibn Arabi taught that the world is remade at every instant rather than coasting along on its own. The future stops being a dark country a person walks toward and becomes something handed over one moment at a time. Dread shrinks to the size of the moment arriving, which comes from the same source as this one.

Everything perishes except His Face: only one thing lasts Al-Ghazali repeats this line from the Quran all through his writing. Under threat, a person starts counting what could be taken: the body, the house, the name, the people they love. Everything on that list was already on its way out beforehand, and the one thing never on it cannot be taken by anyone.

Jalāl: Majesty, the side of God that overwhelms Sufis set it beside jamāl, God's beauty and gentleness. Power on that scale frightens people at first, and the fright is honest, since a person is small next to it. Standing under it, though, every other power that had someone cornered turns out to be small too.

Live Revelation 1:8 today

  1. Step outside for two minutes with your phone in your pocket and look at one thing, a tree, a wall, the light on a car. Let your attention stay there without describing it, and feel how still it is behind your thoughts.
  2. At dinner or on a call with someone you love, put your screen face down and out of reach. Just be in the room with them, with no half of you somewhere else.
  3. When a deadline makes it feel like time is running out on you, stop and ask what is actually true in this minute. Usually only one small thing needs doing right now, and that one thing is enough.

Where am I waiting for a life that is already happening here?

Bhagavad Gita 2

The self was never born and will never die. It does not come into being at some point and pass away at another, so what seems like an ending touches only the form.

Tao Te Ching 25

There is something that was there before heaven and earth, still and formless, out of which everything comes and into which everything returns.
