The temple is the human brain, and its inner measure is taken while the outer court is left unmeasured. That outer court is the surface, unrefined faculties, the part still turned toward the earth and not yet drawn inward, and it is handed over to the Gentiles, the carnal element that lives on the outside of a person.
The holy city is the right hemisphere, the seat of the higher consciousness, and it is trodden down for 42 months. That number is 1260 days, and it reduces to the number 9, which is consciousness. So the treading is consciousness itself pressed under the coarse outer nature: the higher awareness held down for a season while the outward, earthbound faculties have the upper hand.
