Revelation 2:24 Meaning But to You I Say

But to you I say, to the rest who are in Thyatira, as many as don’t have this teaching, who don’t know what some call ‘the deep things of Satan,’ to you I say, I am not putting any other burden on you.

What does Revelation 2:24 mean?

There is a knowledge of the dark side of life so deep that not everyone is required to go down into it. Some people are spared that descent, and no extra weight is laid on them for it.

Psychoanalysis

There is a knowledge of the dark side of life so deep that not everyone is required to go down into it. Some people are spared that descent, and no extra weight is laid on them for it.

For those who do go down, meeting the worst in themselves and in the world is heavy and dangerous work, not a thing to boast about. But this passage is gentle here. It does not demand that everyone plumb the depths of evil. It is enough for many to hold to the good in front of them and carry the load they already have.

  1. Put down one heavy thing you have been carrying that was never actually yours, a problem at work, a family argument, a stranger's crisis online. You are allowed to not be the one who goes down into it.
  2. When someone says their hard road is the only real one, let them have their story without taking it on. Your quieter life is not a smaller one.
  3. On a day when the news or a group chat pulls you toward every terrible thing at once, close the tab and do the good that is in front of you, the dishes, the call, the kid's homework.

What weight have you picked up lately that was never yours to carry?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

The duck's legs are short and the crane's are long, and stretching either one is a cruelty, not an improvement. What is natural to you is not a smaller version of what is natural to someone else.

Bhagavad Gita

Better to do your own work imperfectly than someone else's well. The burden assigned to you is the one you can actually carry.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are yours to handle and some are not. Taking on weight that was never given to you is not courage, it is confusion about your part.
