BUDDHISM
Aṭṭha loka-dhammā: The Eight Worldly Conditions Gain and loss, praise and blame, honor and disrepute, pleasure and pain blow through every life like weather. Smyrna stands in four of them at once, emptied of money and stripped of its good name by neighbors who call it counterfeit. Weather carries no verdict about the ones it falls on, and the works already seen are what remains standing when it clears.
Ariya-dhana: Noble Wealth Faith, virtue, generosity, and wisdom head the old list of a person's seven treasures. Empty purses sit alongside a full account here, since the holdings being counted are the works and the endurance under pressure, and those are already in hand. Thieves take coin, and no thief has ever carried off anyone's generosity.
Māna: Conceit Conceit is the measuring of self against others, the grip on "I am this." Announcing oneself the rightful heir while running down the poor congregation across town is that grip gone public. A title held that tightly has to be defended, and defending it means somebody nearby must be declared a fraud.
Kamma: Intentional Action Deeds, not descent, make a person what they are, and no one is noble by lineage alone. So membership among the covenant people gets decided where it is always decided, in conduct: how the poor are treated, whether the mouth speaks true. The slander itself has answered the question of who these claimants are before any genealogy is opened.
Māra: The Tempter Māra is the deceiver, and he arrives with an army: craving, laziness, cowardice, hypocrisy, contempt for others. An assembly running on those belongs to him whatever name is carved above the door. The people doing the slandering are conscripts in that army, so the opponent is what has enlisted them rather than the crowd itself.
Khanti: Patient Endurance Patience, the strength to bear without striking back, is called the highest austerity. Under abuse the task is simply to keep working and keep steady, the way a gift nobody accepts stays in the giver's hands and goes home with him. Being known already, these works need no defense before the sneering neighbors, which frees the whole congregation from the exhausting business of proving itself.
Buddhism lens
How much of my energy goes to proving myself to people who already decided?
What other people say about you is not yours to control. Your own conduct is, and that is the whole of your business.
Water takes the low place and wins by not fighting. It outlasts the hard thing by refusing the contest.
Who is rich? The one who is glad with their portion. The ledger is not the one in the bank.
