and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time.

What does Revelation 20:3 mean?

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The binding of the adversary is the mastering of the lower drive within a person. The dragon is the reptilian force at the base of the body, the coiled sense-energy that deceives the mind while it rules. Cast down and sealed in the bottomless pit, it is driven back into the deep unconscious below waking sight, shut away so it can no longer mislead the many faculties of the self.

The number 1000 stands for a completed round of spiritual rest, a long interval in which the higher awareness governs unopposed. That the beast is loosed a little season afterward shows the old energy is subdued, not destroyed: mastery holds for a full cycle, then the base force must be met and overcome once more.

Dragon: the coiled reptilian sense-energy at the base of the body, deceiving the mind while it goes unmastered. Bottomless pit: the deep unconscious beneath waking sight, where the subdued lower drive is sealed away. Thousand years: a completed cycle of inner rest in which the higher awareness reigns unopposed.

Live Revelation 20:3 today

  1. Pick one habit you have mostly handled, late scrolling, snapping at traffic, the second drink, and today give it a quiet check. Being honest about where it still lives keeps it from running the show.
  2. Tell someone close to you the one thing you tend to slip back into when you are tired. Saying it out loud to another person takes away most of its hiding places.
  3. When a stressful hour arrives and the old reaction surges up again, say to yourself, there it is, and take the next step anyway. The return of the pull is not failure; it is the part of the cycle you were told to expect.

What have you called finished that is really just resting?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism, Dhammapada

The mind is hard to guard and quick to wander, and the one who tames it finds peace. But watchfulness is a practice, not a finish line; the habits lie down, they do not die.

Stoicism · Epictetus

The passions are not removed, they are put under the care of reason. Keep that care going daily, because what you stop watching slowly takes charge again.

Zen

After awakening, the dishes still need washing. The same old pull returns; what changes is that you now see it coming.
