Revelation 22:9 Meaning He Said to Me
He said to me, “See you don’t do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers, the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”

Revelation 22:9 · World English Bible
He said to me, “See you don’t do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers, the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
The refusal of worship marks the inner turning point where the seeker no longer bows to the messenger and mistakes the guide for the source. The angel is a faculty within the same person, a fellowservant of the same body, not a separate being to be adored; to fall before it would be to freeze at the intermediary and stop short of the center.

ESOTERIC
The refusal of worship marks the inner turning point where the seeker no longer bows to the messenger and mistakes the guide for the source. The angel is a faculty within the same person, a fellowservant of the same body, not a separate being to be adored; to fall before it would be to freeze at the intermediary and stop short of the center. The direction is turned past every mediating power toward the one source alone. The prophets and the keepers of the sayings are the awakened faculties that all serve together, none of them the goal.
What this correction does is send a person past every helper and inner voice to the single center they all point toward, so no messenger is mistaken for the source.

SUFISM
God is veiled by seventy thousand veils of light and darkness: brightness can block the view too Al-Ghazali built a short book around that old saying. A dark barrier announces itself, while a shining one looks like the destination, so a person stops there and calls it arrival. Awe naturally lands on whoever stands closest to the light, and that landing feels like piety rather than a mistake. The last thing standing between a person and God is often the most beautiful thing they have ever met.
Shirk khafī: hidden associating The name covers the quiet habit of setting something alongside God without meaning to. Gratitude settles on the hand that delivered the gift and stays there, because that hand is close and visible and the Giver is not. Al-Ghazali points at this as the common fault of sincere people, since it arrives dressed as devotion. Someone can lean on a helper for years and never once decide to.
Tawḥīd: God's oneness Worship has one address, and the rest of the path follows from that. Respect for a teacher, love for a friend, thanks for a helper all stay healthy as long as they pass through and keep going. Trouble starts when one of them becomes the place the heart settles for good. Only one seat sits at that center, and a person who knows it stops filling it by accident.
ʿUbūdiyya: being God's servant The Sufis treat servanthood as the highest rank a person can hold. The Quran honors the Prophet at his greatest moment by naming him God's servant. Anyone close enough to the source to be mistaken for it knows exactly what they carry and what they do not own. That clarity shows up as standing level with the people in front of you instead of above them.
Everything perishes except His Face: only God lasts That line from the Quran runs through the whole tradition. Whatever a person bows to besides God is on its way out, however bright it looks now. Devotion poured into something passing drains away with it, and the person is left holding an empty cup. Directed at the one thing that stays, that same devotion is never wasted.
Esoteric lens
Am I still gathering help for something I already know how to begin?
A raft carries you across the river, and the one who then hauls it onto his back for the rest of the journey has misunderstood its use. Tools are honored by being set down at the right time.
The face of truth is covered over by a disc of gold, and the prayer is for that bright cover to be drawn aside. Even the shining thing in the way is still in the way.
He tells students not to be proud of quoting him, but to show what the teaching became in how they live. The teacher is a means, and the life is the point.
