Revelation 4:8 Meaning The Four Living Creatures

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

These living ones are full of eyes within. True vision does not only look outward at the world of form. It turns inward and grows aware of awareness itself, the silent seeing that is always here beneath your thoughts. This inner seeing never sleeps.

Their endless song of holiness is not a duty performed but the natural response of consciousness recognizing the sacred in what is. The One they honor was, and is, and is to come, which is another way of pointing to the eternal present. There is only ever now, and to be fully awake to it is the deepest praise there is.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The 4 living creatures are the 4 powers of the whole self gathered around the center, and being full of eyes within is the inner seeing of a consciousness awake at every point of itself. The number 6 in the wings is the number of man made on the sixth day, the flesh lifted on its own powers toward the throne. Their unresting cry names the one presence that was, is, and is to come, never beginning and never ending.

This praise is the natural state of the awakened interior once its 4 quarters are turned inward and covered with vision. When every power is full of eyes and lifted on its wings, the whole being does nothing but recognize the eternal presence within.

4 beasts: the 4 powers of the whole self gathered around the center, the fourfold nature of a person 6 wings: the number 6 is the number of man formed on the sixth day, the flesh raised on its own powers toward the throne Eyes within: the inner seeing of a consciousness awake at every point of itself

SUFISM

Sufism

Tanzīh: Holding God clear of every comparison Ibn Arabi's word for refusing to shrink God down to anything already familiar. The mind hands over a picture of God almost automatically, and every picture is small enough for the mind to hold. Steady praise keeps pulling those pictures away, leaving a sense of God that no idea can box in.

He is the First and the Last: no moment falls outside God A line of the Quran that Sufis come back to constantly. Most fear sits in time, in what already happened and in what is coming next. Naming God as both ends of time puts the whole stretch in one pair of hands, so past and future stop feeling like two separate threats.

Baṣīra: The heart's own eyesight Al-Ghazali's name for a seeing that does not run through the eyes. Ordinary looking takes in what surrounds a person, while this looking also turns inward and reads what is happening in their own heart. Praise offered with both open is harder to fake, because the showing-off in it gets caught as it starts.

Dhikr: Remembrance that keeps running The steady mention of God, spoken aloud or under the breath. Anyone who tries it finds the mind wandering off within seconds, and the practice is simply coming back, over and over. In time the returning gets quicker, until remembering runs under ordinary tasks the way a song stays with you while you work.

No self-disclosure repeats itself: each moment shows something new Ibn Arabi held that God never appears twice in the same form. If so, nothing seen yesterday uses up what can be seen today, and no last word about God is ever available. Praise without end then makes sense, since every moment brings something that was not there to be praised before.

I cannot count Your praises; You are as You have praised Yourself: praise never finishes Words the Prophet reached for when words ran out. Anyone trying to say something adequate about God hits a wall, and the honest move is to say so out loud. Admitting it takes the pressure off, since finishing the praise was never the task, only continuing to offer it.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Eyes within as well as around is the whole matter: attention that has learned to turn back on itself. Most look only outward and remain strangers at home, knowing the world in detail and the watcher not at all. When looking includes the looker, the creature becomes all eye, with nothing left over to sleep.

Restlessness of that kind is not strain, since awareness does not tire; only the doer tires. What pours out of such a state is a song arising by itself, buying nothing. Past and future are the two ways the mind steps out of what is, and the one full of eyes has no use for either.

Live Revelation 4:8 today

  1. Once today, close your eyes for thirty seconds and instead of looking at anything, feel that you are aware. Let that be enough, with no result to reach.
  2. Look at someone you see every day, the barista, your partner, a coworker, as if for the first time. Let the ordinary sight of them land on you instead of scanning past it.
  3. Stuck in traffic or a long line, instead of reaching for the phone, let yourself simply be awake to where you are. Light, sound, breath, the fact of being here.

What is it in you that is awake right now, even before any thought about it?

Zen

Before you can see the world clearly, turn the light of seeing back on itself. Ask what is doing the looking.

Upanishads

The eye cannot see itself, yet nothing is seen without it. Awareness is never an object you find, it is what is finding.

Sufism · Rumi

There is a seeing behind the eyes, a listening behind the ears. Everything sacred is already singing, and waking up is hearing it.
