Romans 10:2 Meaning For I Testify About Them That They

For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

Taqlīd: Holding a belief because other people hold it Al-Ghazali walked away from his teaching post after admitting his own faith was inherited rather than examined. Fervor picked up from family or teachers can burn very hot while resting on nothing the person has ever looked at. Heat like that shows how much someone cares; it shows nothing about whether the caring points the right way.

You were sent to unite, not to divide: clumsy love still reaches God Rumi tells of God scolding Moses for shaming a shepherd whose prayers were crude and mistaken. Being wrong about God and loving God are two different things, and the first does not cancel the second. Someone whose understanding lags behind their devotion is still heard, which is why the tradition handles such a person gently rather than with scorn.

Hawā: Personal craving wearing God's name The Quran describes a man who has taken his own craving as his god and never sees the swap. Hard work for God is the easiest hiding place for the self, since nobody thinks to question it. Pride in belonging, anger at outsiders, the pleasure of being right: all of it travels comfortably under a holy label.

God has seventy thousand veils of light and darkness: some screens are made of light Al-Ghazali built a whole book on this saying of the Prophet, and his hardest case is the veil made of light. A cherished doctrine or a beautifully kept practice can stand between a person and God while looking exactly like the road to him. Nobody suspects a screen made of something good, so it stays up for years.

Baṣīra: Seeing for yourself The Quran has the Prophet say he calls people to God with his eyes open. Sight changes what effort does. Without it, every extra ounce of energy carries a person further from where they meant to arrive, and the sincerity behind the effort does nothing to fix the direction.

Maʿrifa: Knowing God firsthand Al-Ghazali compared knowing about God to reading about health, and knowing God to being well. Devotion built on reports stays tense, because underneath it a person knows they are standing on someone else's word. When the knowing becomes their own, the same devotion goes quieter and steadier, with nothing left to prove.

  1. Take one belief you are loud about and ask yourself, honestly, where you got it. If the answer is "my family" or "people I admire online," that is worth knowing before you defend it again.
  2. When someone fumbles something you care about, says it clumsily, gets the details wrong, resist the correction and ask what drew them to it. Being wrong and caring deeply are two different things.
  3. In the next argument where you feel the hot certainty rising, pay attention to what the heat is doing for you. The pleasure of being right travels easily under good causes, and it is the hardest thing to spot in yourself.

What do you hold because you have looked at it, and what do you hold because it was handed to you?

Knowing that you do not know is the healthy state, and being certain you know is the sickness. Confidence is not the same as sight.

The Buddha told people not to accept a teaching because of tradition, a teacher's reputation, or the fact that everyone around them held it. Test it in your own life first.
