Romans 10:3 Meaning For Being Ignorant of God’s Righteousness

For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

What does Romans 10:3 mean?

The ego is forever trying to make itself right, to prove its own goodness, to stand as righteous in its own eyes. This striving comes from not knowing the deeper truth of who you are.

Ego v. Being

The ego is forever trying to make itself right, to prove its own goodness, to stand as righteous in its own eyes. This striving comes from not knowing the deeper truth of who you are.

When you are unaware of the wholeness already present beneath the personal self, you compulsively try to build worth through effort and self-image. But this can never succeed, because it is the very seeking that keeps you separate. True righteousness is not constructed by the ego. It is what remains when you surrender the need to prove yourself and let a greater intelligence live through you.

Live Romans 10:3 today

  1. When you catch yourself drafting the mental case for why you are a good person, maybe after a small argument or a hard email, stop the draft. Sit with the plain fact of the moment instead, with no verdict attached.
  2. Let someone be right today in a conversation that does not actually matter. In the group chat, in the kitchen, with a coworker, just drop it and feel how little you lose.
  3. When you are criticized at work and your chest tightens, wait three breaths before the defense comes out. Ask yourself whether you want to be understood or whether you want to look blameless.

What would today feel like if you had nothing left to prove about yourself?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 38

The person who makes a display of goodness is already standing outside of it. Real virtue does not know its own name.

Zen

A student asked how to become pure. The teacher answered that the polishing is the dust. Nothing you add to yourself gets you closer to what you already are.

Bhagavad Gita

Act without grasping at the result, and the self that needs credit quietly steps aside. The doing is clean when no one is collecting proof.
