SUFISM
Istiʿdād: The readiness a person is made with Ibn Arabi used this word for the shape of the cup: the pouring stays the same, and what receives it differs. So the gap between two people lies in how each was built to take it in, not in how much was offered. Comparison loses its sting once that lands, because a smaller cup carries no shame and a wider one earns no credit.
Shukr: Gratitude For al-Ghazali, gratitude means using something for the purpose its giver had in mind. An ability you did not choose, and could lose tomorrow, sits differently in your hands once you hold it as a loan. The grip loosens, the thing gets spent instead of guarded, and the need to prove you deserved it quietly drops.
ʿUjb: Being pleased with yourself over what you were handed al-Ghazali named this the sickness that turns a blessing into a rank. The shift happens slowly: an ability arrives as something received and ends up as evidence that you stand above the room. From then on every use of it is partly a bid for standing, and the work gets worse, because half your attention is on how you look.
Ṣidq: Truthfulness that goes all the way through Sufis use this for a life where the outside matches the inside, with nothing claimed past what you hold. Speaking beyond your own footing is easy and nearly invisible, since borrowed certainty sounds exactly like the earned kind. Staying inside your own measure keeps your words able to hold weight, so the people leaning on them are not let down.
Deeds are empty shapes and sincerity is the life in them: the aim behind an act decides its worth Ibn Ata Allah put it that way. Anything done where others can see it splits easily, part for the good it does and part for how it lands. The split is hard to catch from inside, since the act looks identical either way, and only the small lift of being watched gives it away. Work aimed at one audience keeps steady whether or not anyone is impressed.

Which of your abilities are you still holding as proof of something, rather than as something lent to you?
Better to do your own work imperfectly than to do someone else's work well, because the nature you were given is the only instrument actually in your hands.
The cicada cannot fly the distance of the great bird, and the great bird cannot live in a cucumber patch. Each creature is filled to its own size, and no size is a verdict.
You are an actor handed a part you did not pick. Playing it well is entirely yours; choosing whether it was a large part or a small one was never on offer.
