Romans 13:11 · World English Bible
Do this, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awaken out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed.
To be asleep is to live lost in thought, carried along by the mind without ever being truly present. Most people pass their lives this way, dreaming of past and future while the living moment slips by unnoticed.

EGO & BEING
To be asleep is to live lost in thought, carried along by the mind without ever being truly present. Most people pass their lives this way, dreaming of past and future while the living moment slips by unnoticed. Now it is time to awaken, and that word, now, is the whole instruction.
Salvation is nearer than you think because it was never in the future at all. It waits only in the present, the one place you keep overlooking. The moment you become fully awake to this instant, the freedom you longed for is already here, because it exists only in the present and the present is always available.

ESOTERIC
Sleep is the ordinary waking state of a person who moves through life without inner awareness, mistaking the dream of the senses for the whole of reality. To awake out of sleep is the rising of consciousness into itself, the recognition that the sleeper has been living below its own capacity. The time is now, not in some distant history or future rescue, because salvation is the inner unfolding that draws nearer the moment attention turns inward. What was believed at a distance becomes near as soon as the sleeper begins to stir.
Deliverance is not an event that arrives from outside on a far-off day. It is the waking up of awareness that is already close, and it comes nearer the instant a person begins to rouse from the trance of ordinary living.
Sleep: the ordinary unaware state of a person who takes the dream of the senses for reality Awaking: the rising of consciousness into itself, the recognition of a life lived below its own capacity

BUDDHISM
Thīna-middha: Sloth and Torpor Heaviness of mind, counted among the five hindrances. Sleep here has settled on people already on the road, dozing in the saddle while the horse walks on. Debts of love to a neighbor, just spoken of a few lines before, cannot be paid by someone half asleep, so the drowse is a practical failure before it is anything else.
Saṃvega: Sense of Urgency The jolt that lands when the shortness of time becomes obvious. "Already time" is that jolt, the hour having slipped by while the sleeper slept, so the first feeling on waking is lateness. Alarm of this kind gets a person out of bed instead of leaving them to roll over.
Kālaññutā: Knowing the Right Time Reading what the hour asks, listed among the marks of a mature person. A farmer tells planting season from harvest and works accordingly, and the same skill applies when night is far gone and day is close. Dressing for the hour that is coming rather than the one just past is the whole of the instruction.
Appamāda: Heedfulness Care held steady over time, the last word the Buddha left. "Do this" carries the weight, since waking once is easy and staying awake through a whole day is the labor. Someone who rises and then sits on the edge of the bed has not yet risen, and the hours after the alarm are where the matter is settled.
Anupubbasikkhā: Gradual Training Training that deepens by degrees, like a shore sloping down into the sea. "Nearer than when we first believed" measures ground already covered, so the road has been doing its work even under the drowsing. Distance behind is the argument for walking the rest, the way the last stretch of a long journey is the one worth pressing through.
Bodhi: Awakening The complete waking the whole path moves toward. Rising from an ordinary night and rising from delusion run in one direction, so an hour of plain alertness now belongs to what is drawing nearer. Each such hour is the distance closing.

AWARENESS
Sleep is the ordinary condition of a mind running on memory and expectation while nobody is present behind it. A man eats, works, quarrels, and remembers none of it, because a machine was doing the living. Waking takes one moment, when attention turns from what is being thought toward the one who thinks.
Nearness has nothing to do with the calendar. What is sought stands closer than the seeking, closer than the belief that first set a man searching, and the searching is exactly what pushes it into tomorrow. Drop the tomorrow and the distance goes with it.
Ego v. Being lens
Where were you for most of today?
The inattentive are already as good as sleeping. Attention is the thing that makes a life alive.
We spend our days preparing to live and keep postponing it. Life slips by while you are getting ready for it.
A student asked when enlightenment comes. The teacher said: now, and now, and now. There is no other hour it arrives in.
