Romans 14:14 Meaning I Know

I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself; except that to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

What does Romans 14:14 mean?

Nothing carries meaning on its own. A thing is neither clean nor unclean until a mind pronounces it so, and that judgment, once held, becomes the person's whole experience of it.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Nothing carries meaning on its own. A thing is neither clean nor unclean until a mind pronounces it so, and that judgment, once held, becomes the person's whole experience of it. The world does not arrive stamped with good and bad.

It waits, blank, for the estimate placed upon it, and then it answers back in kind. What seems unclean to one is harmless to another, because each meets only his own verdict wearing the mask of an outer object. The value a person assigns is the value he then lives inside. Meaning is granted from within, never found without.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Nothing binds a person until they decide what it means, and after that the meaning binds completely.

A thing becomes clean or unclean the moment someone assigns it a meaning, and the meaning then carries the force of a law. It sets the emotion, the emotion sets what a man can do without violating himself, and two people at the identical plate live differently.

Persuasion in the Lord Jesus moved Paul, not an argument won against the old categories but a stronger certainty that replaced them. A fence merely assumed is still load-bearing for the one assuming it, which is why charging at another person's limit with the truth injures them instead of freeing them. Owning meaning as the source costs a person their favorite explanation, that the constraint was out there in the thing.

Live Romans 14:14 today

  1. Find one small thing today you call annoying, the slow line, the noise upstairs, the long commute, and take the label off it for ten minutes. See what is actually there once your verdict is gone.
  2. When someone is upset about something that would not touch you at all, do not correct them. Let it teach you that you are both living inside your own ratings of the same world, and be gentle with theirs.
  3. In a hard moment, name what you are adding to it. The event is one thing, the meaning you stamped on it is another. Set the stamp down and handle just what is in front of you.

How much of what is bothering me today did I put there myself?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Things do not disturb us. Our opinions about them do. The sting you feel came from the verdict, not the event.

Zen

Two people stand in the same rain. One is ruined, one is refreshed. The rain has no opinion.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

What is useless to one person is treasure to another. Beautiful and ugly are labels we hang, then mistake for the thing itself.
