"Justified" is courtroom language: God the judge declares a guilty person in the right, and the verdict stands. Nothing found in the defendant moves Him to do it; His own grace does.

"Freely" translates a word meaning for nothing, with no cause in the one who receives it. Israel's law forbade a judge to clear the guilty, so the acquittal has to be bought. "Redemption" named a price counted out to buy a person out of slavery. None of that price is charged to the guilty; God supplies it Himself, in Christ Jesus.

Live Romans 3:24 today

  1. Write down the one thing you quietly believe you have to fix about yourself before you are allowed to be loved. Then sit with the possibility that the verdict came in before the fixing.
  2. Forgive someone today without making them earn it first. No speech, no conditions, just drop the ledger you have been keeping in your head.
  3. When you blow it at work or snap at home, skip the usual spiral of self-punishment. Say the plain apology, make it right if you can, and then let it be over instead of charging yourself interest for a week.

What are you still trying to pay for that has already been covered?

The same truth in other traditions

Pure Land Buddhism · Shinran

Shinran taught that no amount of self-effort can carry a person across, and that rescue comes entirely from outside, from Amida's vow rather than from the practitioner's merit. The one who knows they have nothing to offer is exactly the one it is for.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 18:66

Abandon every other refuge and come to me, Krishna says, and I will free you. The freeing is his doing, offered to the one who brings only their surrender.

Sufism · Rabia of Basra

Rabia prayed that if she worshipped God for fear of punishment or hope of reward, He would withhold both, and asked only for Himself. Mercy is not wages, and treating it as wages misses it.
