Romans 6:3 Meaning Or Don’t You Know That All We

Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

What does Romans 6:3 mean?

There is a death that happens while you are fully alive, and it is the dying of the false self, the constructed identity the mind mistakes for who you are. To be immersed in this death is to let that old self go under and not resurface, to stop defending the story of me that has run your life.

Ego v. Being

There is a death that happens while you are fully alive, and it is the dying of the false self, the constructed identity the mind mistakes for who you are. To be immersed in this death is to let that old self go under and not resurface, to stop defending the story of me that has run your life. This is not morbid. It is the doorway to freedom.

What drowns is only the ego, the accumulated sense of separateness built out of past and thought. What remains is the deeper being that was never born and cannot die. You enter true life by first allowing the self you clung to to end, here and now, so that presence can take its place.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Baptism is the meditative rise of consciousness climbing through its stages, from the body up toward the spirit, and the death spoken of belongs to the lower self that gets left behind on the way up. Nothing here concerns water poured on a head in a church. As awareness ascends through the stages, through truth and through spirit, the carnal identity that was tied to the flesh cannot follow, and so it dies, the way a lower rung is left as you climb. Paul knew this rise firsthand, the out-of-body lift he called reaching the third heaven, the same inner ascent into higher consciousness.

To be joined to the Christ within is to make that climb, and the dying is simply the old flesh-bound self falling away as the mind rises past the level where it lived.

Live Romans 6:3 today

  1. Catch yourself rehearsing your side of an old argument today and set the story down mid-sentence. You are allowed to stop telling it.
  2. Let someone have a wrong idea of you today without straightening it out. See how little it actually costs.
  3. When you are criticized and the defense rises up fast, pause before you speak and say only what is true. Whatever wanted to fight back was not the real you.

Die before you die, and there is nothing left to lose. What passes is the self you were defending, not you.

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who lets go of being somebody becomes whole. Nothing can be taken from a person who is no longer holding themselves up.

Buddhism

The self you defend so hard is a bundle of habits and memories, not a solid thing. Seeing through it is a relief, not a loss.
