SUFISM
Al-nafs al-ammāra bi'l-sū': The self that keeps pushing toward wrong The Quran gives this pushing self its name. Nearly everyone carries an inner voice that wants comfort, standing, and its own way, and it never asks permission before making demands. Having a name for it changes how a person meets it, because the pull stops feeling like their identity and starts feeling like a piece of luggage. Its demands can then be heard without being obeyed.
Die before you die: the self is let go of while a person is still alive Sufis have passed this line down for centuries as words of the Prophet. The death it points to happens in the middle of an ordinary day, at the moment someone stops defending their own case. A person who has already given up on getting their way has little left to protect, so the old threats and bribes lose their grip.
Fanā': Passing away The word names the dissolving of a person's claim to run their own life. It rarely arrives as a dramatic scene. More often someone finds, months later, that the demands which used to run the day have gone quiet, and that the one who kept score is no longer at the table.
God makes you die to yourself and brings you alive in him: the two halves of one change Junayd, an early teacher in Baghdad, summed up the whole path in that sentence. Two things happen in the same motion: something old ends, and something begins in the space it leaves. A person braced only for loss usually finds that they have been handed more than they gave up.
Ḥurriyya: Freedom In this tradition, freedom means belonging to one master so completely that nothing else can claim you. Someone ruled by appetite or fear takes orders all day without ever seeing them as orders, since each craving arrives as a small command. When those commands stop landing, ordinary choices open up again, and doing the decent thing costs far less than it used to.

AWARENESS
Crucifixion here is an inner event, the ego coming to its end while the body goes on breathing. Sin is sleep, being lived by the mind instead of living, and the acts everyone worries about are only its by-products.
The false center cannot be killed by effort, since the effort is the same center in fresh clothes. It dies of being watched. Stay awake while anger is burning, neither acting on it nor pushing it down, and what was called bondage shows itself as habit, and habit cannot hold under a steady look.

SELF-HELP
You cannot manage a behaviour whose owner is still alive.
Willpower loses to identity in a straight fight, every time. A person who still defines themselves as a slave will find the old habits waiting whenever discipline slips, because the label sets what feels natural, what feels natural sets the impulse, and the impulse wins whenever attention is elsewhere. Being crucified with him removes the one those habits were serving, and they have nobody left to obey.
Bondage read this way is loyalty: the deeds were being faithful to a definition. Someone who keeps the old man alive and only fights his deeds signs up for a war that renews itself every morning.
Sufism lens
What would today feel like if nothing you wanted had any authority over you?
The mind can be a person's closest friend or their worst enemy, depending on whether it has been brought under their hand or left to give the orders. The same self that drags someone down is the one that can carry them.
No one is free who is ruled by their own appetites, because every craving arrives as a small command and gets obeyed before it is ever examined. Freedom begins when a person can hear the demand without taking it as their own voice.
To study the way is to study the self, and to study the self is to let it drop. What falls away is not the person but their constant insistence on being at the center.
