For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection;

What does Romans 6:5 mean?

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A seed must disappear into the ground and cease being a seed before anything new can rise. In the same way, the false self must be allowed to die before the deeper life within you can emerge. These are not two separate events but one continuous movement, the letting go and the awakening bound together like the seed and the plant.

When you stop defending the constructed self and let it fall into stillness, something that was always present begins to live through you. Resurrection is not a reward that comes later. It is what naturally arises the moment the old identity is released, because presence was there all along, waiting under the surface for the ego to finally give way.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The death spoken of here is the dying of the mortal sense of self, the small man who believes he is only flesh and will end. To be planted in that death is to let it go all the way down, like a seed put under the ground. What is joined to that death is joined to what comes after, and what comes after is a waking, not a fresh opinion about oneself.

Resurrection is God rising within a person, the buried life coming awake inside the skull as the self he always was. The two belong together as one motion. Down into the death of the old sense of being, and the same likeness carries a man up into the waking. The Christ asleep in you is not an idea to adopt. He is the one who wakes as you.

Live Romans 6:5 today

  1. Pick one thing you have been defending, your side of a disagreement, a reputation at work, and quietly stop defending it for a day. Watch what fills the space you were spending on it.
  2. In your next hard conversation, let the other person be right about something without correcting the record. Something softer tends to show up in the room the moment you stop protecting your position.
  3. When a group chat or email thread pulls you to prove yourself, put the phone face down for ten minutes. The urge to answer fades, and what is left is calmer than what you were about to send.

What would die if you stopped holding it up, and what might grow in its place?

Tao Te Ching 22

Yield and you endure. What bends and lets go is not weakened, it is what makes the new growth possible, the way an empty field becomes a harvest.

Buddhism · the Dhammapada

Letting go and freedom are not two different things. The release of the grip and the ease that follows arrive together, in the same movement.

Zen

A student asked how to find the deeper life. The teacher said to put down what you are holding. The student asked what comes next, and the teacher said that was next.
