CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

An heir owns a fortune before a single coin reaches his hand. The wealth is settled by birth, held in trust, waiting on him to grow into it. A man who knows himself as an heir walks through hard days differently, because his standing does not rise and fall with the day.

The suffering named here is the stretch a person feels while an old, cramped self-image gives way to a larger one. That ache is not punishment. It runs alongside the promise, the way soreness runs alongside a body learning new strength. The glory is still ahead, held in reserve, and it belongs to the one who endures the growing into it.

  1. When something hard is stretching you at work and you want out, remind yourself the ache is the fit changing, not a sign you are failing. Soreness and damage feel similar and are not the same.
  2. Sit with someone who is in a rough stretch and do not try to fix it or hurry them past it. Staying there with them is the whole thing.
  3. Under pressure today, when you want to shrink back to the version of yourself that felt safer, hold your ground for one more hour. That is where the growing actually happens.

What in me is sore right now because it is getting bigger?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

No one knows what they are made of until it is tested. Difficulty is not the enemy of a person's growth, it is the ground it happens on.

Buddhism · the lotus

The flower does not rise in spite of the mud. The mud is what it comes up out of and it could not have come up anywhere else.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 76

What is alive is soft and yielding. What has stopped growing goes stiff, and stiffness is the sign that something is finished, not strong.
