Zechariah 8:11 Meaning But Now I Will Not Be

But now I will not be to the remnant of this people as in the former days,” says Yahweh of Armies.

What does Zechariah 8:11 mean?

Survivors forecast the future out of what they survived, and that is the one place a forecast should never come from. Hard years do their real damage after they end, leaving behind references so vivid that certainty about the coming years forms without anyone testing it.

Survivors forecast the future out of what they survived, and that is the one place a forecast should never come from.

Hard years do their real damage after they end, leaving behind references so vivid that certainty about the coming years forms without anyone testing it. That certainty sets the state, the state decides what gets attempted, and a people braced for the repeat will not start what takes years to mature.

Yahweh revokes the authority of the pattern, not the memory of it. The hard years happened; the conclusion that they describe every year still coming was only ever accepted, and a fence built from real history is still a fence mistaken for the horizon. Hold it and the commitments stay short, the plans defensive, the sowing light, and the return comes back sized to the hedging rather than to the promise.

Live Zechariah 8:11 today

  1. Name one thing you stopped trying because of how it went last time. Ask honestly whether anything is actually different now, including you.
  2. Say yes to one invitation you would normally dodge because of how a similar thing went years ago. Let the new evidence in.
  3. When you catch yourself bracing for the familiar bad ending before anything has happened, say plainly that the old thing happened and this is not it yet. Then make the fuller commitment instead of the hedged one.

Where are you living inside a fence built out of something that is already over?

The burnt hand remembers the fire, and the remembering is useful. Deciding every pot is hot is not the fire teaching you, it is you teaching yourself.

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. The mind rehearses the old disaster and calls the rehearsal foresight.
