ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Growth in a person runs in one direction and cannot be hurried. The animal body arrives first, the appetites and the survival mind, the flesh that wants and fears and defends itself. Only after that long stretch of ordinary living does the higher awareness open, the part that watches the appetites without being owned by them. The order is fixed. No one wakes into the spiritual before the natural has been lived and worn thin, because the natural is the soil the other grows out of. What religion sells as a leap into heaven is really this slow ripening: the same body that once ran on hunger and reflex begins, later, to run on understanding.

The seed rots before the plant stands. That is why the struggling, appetite-driven years are not a mistake to skip past. They are the first and necessary half of a single life, and the quiet inner knowing is simply what that life becomes when it has finished feeding on the world.

Live 1 Corinthians 15:46 today

  1. Stop judging your younger self for a decision that looks obvious now. You did not have today's eyes yet, and today's eyes grew out of that exact mistake.
  2. With someone younger, or someone earlier on than you, hold back the advice once and let them have their own stretch of figuring it out. Their hard years are doing work your shortcut cannot do.
  3. When you are frustrated at how slowly something in you is changing, give it one more ordinary day instead of a new plan. Slow is not failure, it is the only speed this grows at.

What are you trying to rush that is actually right on time?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · ripening

A student asked how long enlightenment takes and the teacher pointed at the garden. The fruit cannot be hurried, and pulling at it only takes it green.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 64

The great tree grew from a tiny shoot and the long journey began under someone's feet. Nothing arrives at the end that did not pass through the beginning.

Sufism · the stages of the self

The tradition maps the soul from the demanding self through the self-accusing self and only later to the settled one. No stage is skipped, each is the ground of the next.
