Exodus 20:14 Meaning You Shall Not Commit Adultery

You shall not commit adultery.

What does Exodus 20:14 mean?

The mixing forbidden is the adulteration of consciousness, the pure inner life diluted by union with what does not belong to it. Adultery in the body is the wedding of a person's attention to the outer, the loyal center that should hold to its own source giving itself away to sensation and the world.

The mixing forbidden is the adulteration of consciousness, the pure inner life diluted by union with what does not belong to it. Adultery in the body is the wedding of a person's attention to the outer, the loyal center that should hold to its own source giving itself away to sensation and the world. The marriage kept is the one within, spirit and soul bound in fidelity so that the higher awareness is not spent on foreign objects.

The command reaches past the bed to every faithlessness of the mind, every time the settled self is traded for a passing pull from below. What stays guarded is the wholeness of a person, one center undivided and unmixed.

Adultery: the adulteration of consciousness, the pure inner life diluted by union with the outer world and its sensations.

Live Exodus 20:14 today

  1. Pick one stretch today, maybe a walk or a meal, where you do not reach for your phone. Not forever, just that stretch. See how often the hand goes looking anyway, and let it come back empty.
  2. When you are with someone, be with them. Phone face down, off the table, out of reach. Half your attention given to a person while the other half waits for a buzz is its own small betrayal, and they can feel it.
  3. When the day gets loud and you want to numb out, pause before the scroll. Ask what you actually want. Sometimes it is food, or air, or to stop working, and the feed was never going to deliver any of those.

Where is most of your attention going, and did you choose that?

Tao Te Ching 12

Too much color blinds the eye, too much flavor deadens the tongue. A life spent chasing stimulation ends up unable to taste anything.

Buddhism · guarding the senses

The teaching is not that the world is bad, it is that attention leaks. Wherever the senses go unwatched, the mind follows and scatters.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You cannot be loyal to your own center while you are at the mercy of whatever is in front of you. Keep track of what belongs to you and what does not.
