Genesis 1:2 · World English Bible
The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Before any form appears, there is the formless. The empty darkness and the deep are not an absence to be feared.

EGO & BEING
Before any form appears, there is the formless. The empty darkness and the deep are not an absence to be feared. They are the unmanifested, the silent field of pure potential from which everything is born. Every world, every thought, rises out of this stillness and returns to it.
And notice what moves upon those waters. It is Spirit, consciousness itself, hovering over the formless before a single thing takes shape. This is the order of all creation. Awareness comes first, and form arises within it. When you rest in the still awareness beneath your own thoughts, you are resting in the same ground from which everything comes.

MANIFESTATION
Before anything took shape, there was formless stuff and a moving spirit above it. That is the exact condition inside a person before a wish becomes a fact. The deep is the unshaped possibility, waiting, holding no fixed form of its own. The spirit that moves upon it is human imagining, and until that imagining stirs, the deep stays dark and empty.
Creation begins the instant the moving spirit meets the waiting waters. Attention passes over the formless and gives it an outline, and only then does a world start to appear. The order is fixed and it is the same in every making. First the empty deep, then the spirit that broods on it, then the shape. Whatever a man builds begins as unformed potential brooded upon in the mind. The moving comes before the made. Nothing takes form until something moves upon it.

ESOTERIC
Before awakening, the body and its awareness lie formless and empty, a person who has not yet been shaped from within. The earth without form is the flesh before the higher self has organized it, and the void is consciousness with nothing yet arisen in it. Darkness on the face of the deep is the unlit condition of the inner nature, the depths of a person still without light. Then the Spirit of God moving on the face of the waters is the divine breath stirring across the emotional and mental substance, the current of higher life beginning to brood over the raw material of the self. Waters are the fluid, uncrystallized states of feeling and thought waiting to be moved. This is the first stirring of awakening in a person before any order or light has come, the moment spirit begins to work upon the unformed inner ground.
Earth: the body and flesh before the higher self has shaped and organized it, still formless. Deep: the unlit depths of the inner nature, the darkness of consciousness before light arises. Waters: the fluid, unformed states of feeling and thought in a person, the substance the Spirit begins to move upon. Spirit of God: the divine breath and higher life-current stirring across the raw material of the self, the first movement of awakening.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
Before anything takes shape, there is a dark, formless depth. Every beginning looks like this, whether it is a world or a single life. The waters here stand for the deep layer of the mind out of which all conscious life slowly rises, still unformed, holding everything and nothing.
Something moves over that darkness and begins to draw order out of it. This is how awareness comes to be. Out of a vast, unshaped inner sea a first light of consciousness appears and starts to separate one thing from another, and only then does a formed world become possible.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Before anything can be made, the raw material lies formless, a dark expanse with no edges and no meaning. Potential without shape is not yet a world. Call it the deep, the chaos that every creator must enter and confront before a single thing stands where nothing stood.
What hovers over that water is the ordering principle, the spirit that carves distinction into the undifferentiated. Creation happens as an act, a deliberate imposition of form on what has none. A person faces the same blank water in his own life. He becomes a creator by moving over his own chaos and calling something into shape.
Ego v. Being lens
Where am I filling a silence that was actually trying to give me something?
Thirty spokes share one hub, but the wheel turns because of the hole in the middle. Clay makes the pot, yet the empty space inside is what you use.
Form is not separate from emptiness, and emptiness is not separate from form. The openness is not nothing; it is what everything is made of.
Awareness is not one more object in the world. It is the light by which every object is known, present before anything appears.
