Jacob is the spirit, the striving self that grasped after the birthright, and his journey is a movement inward. He comes into the east, and the east is the presence of God, the right hemisphere of the brain where the higher consciousness dwells. The land is the mind itself, the inner country of a person's states.

Having wrestled with Esau, the carnal left-side nature, the spirit now travels toward its opposite pole and arrives at the region of first light within. This is the turn a person makes when the grasping self quits the lower ground and moves toward the higher mind. The journey east is the spirit crossing over into the side of the brain where the presence of God is found.

Live Genesis 29:1 today

  1. On your commute today, take one stretch of it with no input. No podcast, no music, no scrolling. Just the window, the road, your own thinking. Let the trip be the trip.
  2. The next time someone asks how you are, answer from the inside instead of the outside. Not the schedule, the actual weather in you. One honest sentence is enough.
  3. When a group chat or an email thread starts pulling you into a fight, step back from the keyboard for the length of one walk to the window. You are not leaving the conversation, you are going to the quieter side of yourself before you answer from the loud one.

Which direction have I been traveling lately, further out or further in?

Zen tradition

The seeker travels far looking for the teaching and is told the journey was always inward. The road is real, but the country it crosses is the mind.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The one who has turned the senses homeward, away from the pull of outer things, finds the light that was waiting in the self the whole time.
