Genesis 3:24 Meaning So He Drove Out the Man

So he drove out the man; and he placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

What does Genesis 3:24 mean?

Driven from the garden, the man falls from the state of pure inner union into the ordinary waking self that lives outside, exiled into flesh and sense. The garden of Eden is that lost condition of wholeness within the body, and its guarded gate stands at the east, the place of rising, because the way back opens only where the inner light dawns.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Driven from the garden, the man falls from the state of pure inner union into the ordinary waking self that lives outside, exiled into flesh and sense. The garden of Eden is that lost condition of wholeness within the body, and its guarded gate stands at the east, the place of rising, because the way back opens only where the inner light dawns. The cherubims are the twin guardians of the threshold, the 2 forces set at the door of the higher life so it cannot be seized by the unready lower self.

The flaming sword turning every way is the axis of energy that spins along the spine, the burning current that both blocks and, when a person is prepared, becomes the very road inward. The tree of life is the spinal column itself, the nerve tree whose crown holds the fruit of awakened consciousness. The way is not sealed forever; it is kept, held in trust, until awareness has risen enough to pass the burning gate.

Garden of Eden: the lost state of inner wholeness within the body, the union a person is exiled from into flesh East: the place of rising light, the direction from which the return to the inner life must come Cherubims: the twin guardian forces set at the threshold of the higher life to bar the unready self Flaming sword: the turning current of energy along the spine, both the barrier and, when a person is ready, the road inward Tree of life: the spinal column and its nerve tree, whose crown bears the fruit of awakened consciousness

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The garden pictures the mind's earliest state, a kind of sleeping wholeness like early childhood, when a person feels no gap between themselves and the world. Growing self-aware breaks that unity, and it has to break, because becoming a full person means waking out of that easy sleep.

The guards at the gate say something plain. Once awareness has come, a person cannot climb back into that lost innocence, however much they long to. So the wholeness the tree offers can only be reached by going on ahead, through the slow work of growing up, not by returning to what they were.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The banishment is the birth of history. Once a person has eaten the fruit and seen his own nakedness, he knows that he can be hurt, and he cannot walk backward into the unconscious paradise he left. The gate closes behind him. What guards it is not spite but a fact: perfection is not handed to the vulnerable creature who has just discovered death.

The flaming sword turns every way, and that is the point. Every route back is cut, so the only road left runs forward, through tested suffering toward something earned. A man who learns how he bleeds learns how everyone else bleeds too. He can turn that into cruelty, or he can sacrifice what is unworthy in himself and make the long approach to the tree again. Paradise is now ahead of you, not behind, and you reach it only by becoming the sort of person who deserves it.

Live Genesis 3:24 today

  1. Sit still for five minutes with no screen and no plan, and let it be uncomfortable. The discomfort is the door, not a sign you should stop.
  2. When a conversation with someone you love hits the same locked place it always hits, stay at the door one minute longer than usual instead of walking off.
  3. When something you have been working toward refuses to open, treat it as held rather than denied. Keep showing up, and let the timing be out of your hands.

What has been kept from me that I might not have been ready to hold?

A burning energy is said to sleep coiled at the base of the spine, and it is both the obstacle and the path. The same fire that stops the unready carries the prepared one upward.

The door you are locked out of is the door you came through. Keep knocking, because the lock is on your side.

There is a gate with no gate in it. What bars you is not a wall, only your not yet being able to walk through.
