Hebrews 7:18 Meaning For There Is an Annulling

For there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and uselessness

What does Hebrews 7:18 mean?

The old commandment set aside is the outward law written on stone and kept by the flesh, which can restrain conduct but never lift consciousness. It is called weak and unprofitable because rule keeping works on the surface of a person and leaves the inner nature unchanged, and no amount of obedience at that level opens the kingdom within.

What goes before is the lower order of religion that governs the body from outside; it is annulled not by rebellion but by outgrowing it.

When the higher priesthood rises inside a person, the external code falls away on its own, the way a rule for children drops off once understanding takes its place. The law was a scaffold, useful for a season and then dismantled once the living structure it served stands on its own.

The commandment going before: the outward law kept by the flesh, able to bind behavior but powerless to raise the consciousness beneath it

Live Hebrews 7:18 today

  1. Look at one rule you set for yourself a while back, a screen cutoff, a strict routine, and ask if it is still carrying you or if you have outgrown it. If it has done its work, let it go without guilt.
  2. With a kid or a younger friend, loosen one rule that no longer fits who they have become. Say plainly that they have grown past it.
  3. When you are stressed and clamping down harder on your own rules, try the opposite for one hour. Let the understanding underneath do the steering instead of the rule.

Which of my rules is now a scaffold around a building that is already standing?

The raft that carried you across the river gets left on the bank. Carrying it on your back the rest of the way is how a help becomes a burden.

Tao Te Ching 48

The real path is subtraction, not addition. What falls away makes room for what was waiting underneath it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

In the beginning a learner needs strict rules, the way a beginner needs a copybook. Later the rules are absorbed and acting rightly is simply what you do.
