James 5:14 Meaning Is Any Among You Sick

Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord,

What does James 5:14 mean?

When sickness comes, a believer is not left to suffer alone. Here is one of the clearest roots of a sacrament the Church still gives today, the anointing of the sick, where a priest prays over the ill person and marks him with blessed oil in the Lord's name.

When sickness comes, a believer is not left to suffer alone. Here is one of the clearest roots of a sacrament the Church still gives today, the anointing of the sick, where a priest prays over the ill person and marks him with blessed oil in the Lord's name. Christ works through these ordinary means, oil and prayer and human hands, to touch a body and a soul that are hurting.

The deeper point is that grace flows through the community, not around it. You are told to call for the Church, to let others carry you when you cannot carry yourself. In your weakest hour, faith becomes something people do for you, until healing or peace or courage is given.

Live James 5:14 today

  1. If you are the one who is sick or worn out, text the three people who would come and tell them plainly what you need. Saying it out loud is the whole task today.
  2. Pick one person you know is unwell and go instead of checking in. Sit in the room, bring the groceries, drive them to the appointment, and stay a little past comfortable.
  3. When someone asks how you are and you are not fine, skip the automatic good thanks. Give them one true sentence and let them decide what to do with it.

Who would I let see me at my weakest, and have I actually asked them?

Buddhism · sangha

The Buddha told a monk that the community is not a part of the path, it is the whole of it, and he himself washed and tended a sick monk no one else would touch. Care given by hands is the teaching.

Judaism · bikkur cholim

Jewish practice makes visiting the sick a duty, not a kindness, and the rabbis said the visitor takes away a share of the illness simply by sitting there. Presence is counted as real help.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca wrote that no one can carry a heavy life alone and that we are born to be each other's support, like stones in an arch. Leaning is the design, not a failure.
