John 19:17 Meaning He Went Out

He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”,

What does John 19:17 mean?

Golgotha, the place of a skull, is your own head, and that is where the whole drama is staged. Not a hill outside a city long ago, but the bone that houses your imagination, the one spot where the creative power in you is fastened to a body and works.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Golgotha, the place of a skull, is your own head, and that is where the whole drama is staged. Not a hill outside a city long ago, but the bone that houses your imagination, the one spot where the creative power in you is fastened to a body and works. The cross a man carries is the burden of a specific state he has taken on and now bears until it comes to term.

He goes forth to the skull because that is where the self is born from above, out of the head as out of a womb. What looks like an execution is a birth. The power in you is nailed to the flesh only so that it can be raised from it. The place where your life feels heaviest and most confined is the exact place your true self emerges.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The cross a person carries is the body itself, borne toward the skull where the true crucifixion unfolds. The real enemy was never a soldier or a crowd but one's own restless thoughts, and the walk outside the gate is the movement away from ordinary, scattered consciousness toward the still center behind the brow. Golgotha names bone because the event belongs to the head, to the small chamber at the pineal seat where sense is stilled and the higher life quickens.

The body is carried inward to the one place in the head where the noise of thought is put to death and something deeper wakes.

Cross: the physical body every person shoulders through life Golgotha: the skull, the inner ground of the crucifixion Place of a skull: the crucifixion occurring within the mind The place: the pineal seat deep in the brain where the awakening centers

Live John 19:17 today

  1. Find the thing you are carrying that is heaviest right now and sit with it for one quiet minute without trying to put it down. That weight is where something in you is turning.
  2. When a person close to you is in the middle of their hardest stretch, stay in it with them instead of hurrying them toward the bright side. Being there is the help.
  3. In the moment today when the pressure feels like too much, stop looking for the exit and stay one breath longer. The place that feels most closed in is usually where you are about to come out different.

What have I been trying to escape that might actually be the place I am being made new?

Zen · Dogen

Dogen taught that practice happens in the body you have, in the posture you are sitting in right now, not somewhere cleaner later. The place you are is the only gate.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 13

The field and the knower of the field are both here, in this body, and the whole thing plays out inside it. Nobody goes elsewhere for the real work.

The Masnavi opens with a reed cut from the reed bed, and it is the cutting that gives it a voice. The wound is what makes the music possible.
