John 3:14 · World English Bible
As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
Healing comes by looking straight at what was killing you. The bronze figure carried the shape of the poison and none of its venom, and that is the pattern: our death is taken up into a life that has no sin in it, and there it dies.

ORTHODOX
Healing comes by looking straight at what was killing you. The bronze figure carried the shape of the poison and none of its venom, and that is the pattern: our death is taken up into a life that has no sin in it, and there it dies.
"Must" is love under its own necessity, not fate. And being lifted up has two faces at once, raised on wood and raised in glory, so the Cross is where the Church looks for life rather than for a picture of dying.

MANIFESTATION
The serpent Moses raised on the pole stands for the creative power itself, the very power the old texts name Christ. That power descends into a man, coils low, and then begins to climb. Lifting up the Son of man means raising it along the spine and up into the skull, where the second birth happens. Nicodemus had just stumbled on this same thing, his reason unable to hold a birth that comes from above.
Held on its own level, the lifting looks like keeping a chosen mood steady until fact catches up, and that reading holds. Deeper down, the same act is the buried power ascending out of the skull, the man born from above rather than from the womb. The serpent poisons while it lies low. Raised, it heals. What climbs in a man is the God who lay sleeping in him.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
The snake that bit the people in the desert was the same shape Moses lifted on a pole. What poisoned them also cured them, once they stopped fleeing and turned to look at it. The mind works the same way. The part of yourself you fear and hide does not weaken while you look away. It weakens when you raise it into the light and look at it honestly.
The Son of Man lifted up means the same thing: the pain you would rather avoid is exactly what you must face openly, because whatever you look at with full awareness stops controlling you the way it did while it was hidden.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The poisoned wanderers were healed not by looking away from the serpent but by staring straight at one raised high on a pole. A person is cured of what is killing him by facing it, lifted into full view, rather than hiding from it in the sand. The thing that struck him becomes the thing he must confront in order to live.
The same pattern returns at the center of the story. Redemption runs through the worst, not around it. No shortcut exists. Turn toward the horror you would rather avoid, and only then does it lose its power to poison you.
Orthodox lens
What are you looking away from, and what might happen if you looked right at it?
The path begins by looking straight at suffering and naming it honestly, not by stepping around it. Nothing can be released that has not first been faced.
There is a saying that the barrier itself is the gate. The thing blocking the way is the exact place the way opens.
On the Day of Atonement the community says its failures out loud together, in plain words, rather than quietly hoping they fade. The wound gets spoken before it gets healed.
