John 3:15 Meaning That Whoever Believes in Him Should Not

that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

What does John 3:15 mean?

"Believes in him" carries the sense of believing into someone, leaning your whole weight on Christ, and not merely agreeing that a report about him is accurate. The one trusted is the Son lifted up to die.

Perishing means being destroyed, and God is the judge who brings it. The alternative held out is life in the age to come, given to the one who believes. "Whoever" reaches past the boundary the first hearers took for granted, that such life came with descent from Abraham. Ancestry counts for nothing here, and neither does a clean record.

Live John 3:15 today

  1. Pick the one thing you have been handling by sheer grip and set it down for an hour today, phone face down, and see whether the world holds without you clenching.
  2. Think of the person you have quietly written off as too far gone, and send them an ordinary message with no agenda in it.
  3. When the deadline tightens and your instinct is to carry all of it yourself, say the true sentence out loud to one person: "I cannot hold this alone."

What am I leaning my whole weight on when things actually go wrong?
