Luke 10:37 Meaning He Said

He said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

What does Luke 10:37 mean?

The one who proved to be the true neighbor was known by a single mark, that he showed mercy, and mercy is the whole of what makes one mind a brother to another. Not blood, not belonging, not the right beliefs, but the willingness to overlook and to help decides who is near and who is far, and by that measure the outsider was nearest of all.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The one who proved to be the true neighbor was known by a single mark, that he showed mercy, and mercy is the whole of what makes one mind a brother to another. Not blood, not belonging, not the right beliefs, but the willingness to overlook and to help decides who is near and who is far, and by that measure the outsider was nearest of all.

To be told to go and do likewise is to be handed the one practice that heals the mind, for mercy given is mercy received, and there is no other way to learn that the self one condemned was always innocent. The instruction lands plainly: the way home is not to be understood and then admired, it is to be lived, one merciful look at a time, until the mind can find no stranger left to withhold it from.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Understanding a story of mercy is the most comfortable way there is to avoid ever performing one.

Naming the right answer discharges the tension that would have made a man move. Being correct feels like completion, so the state settles, the moment passes, and the week ahead looks exactly like the week behind; understanding by itself is entertainment.

Jesus hands back an assignment rather than a conclusion, because mercy described stays an opinion while mercy performed becomes an identity. The doing, on some future road, is what installs the belief the story could only picture. Short of that, a person can carry a flawless theology of compassion and still pass by on schedule for the rest of their life.

Live Luke 10:37 today

  1. Instead of reading one more thing about becoming a better person, do one plain kind act before noon and let that be the lesson.
  2. Let the next person who annoys you off the hook, out loud if you can. Not a thought about forgiveness, an actual sentence.
  3. When you are tired and short and someone needs something, give it anyway, badly if that is all you have. The doing is what teaches.

What do I already know is right and keep putting off doing?

Confucianism · Analects

Asked for one word to live by for life, the teacher said reciprocity: do not do to others what you would not want done to you. One word, lived daily, not admired.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Reciting many teachings and acting on none is like counting another person's cattle. The teaching is only yours once it moves your hands.

Sufism

What you give is what you keep. Mercy shown is mercy understood, and it cannot be learned any other way.
