Matthew 25:5 Meaning Now While the Bridegroom Delayed

Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

What does Matthew 25:5 mean?

The delay of the bridegroom is the long stretch of a life in which the higher self does not arrive at the surface, and in that waiting the faculties of the person lose their vigilance and go dark. Slumber and sleep are not bodily rest but the ordinary unconsciousness in which a human being spends most days, mechanically reacting, never present, the inner watchman dozing at the gate.

Both the wise and the foolish parts of the mind fall under this drowse, which is why every one of them slept: even the prepared centers slacken when the union with the higher tarries. The bridegroom is the awaited marriage of the lower nature with the divine current, the wedding of soul and spirit that has not yet come to consummation inside the person.

The scene is the sleep of a whole inner household, all its lamps still unlit, waiting for a wakening that has not yet broken over it.

Bridegroom: the higher self or divine current awaited for the inner marriage of soul and spirit Slumber and sleep: the ordinary unconsciousness of daily living, the mind dozing at its own gate

Live Matthew 25:5 today

  1. Catch one stretch of autopilot today, the scroll, the drive, the same hallway, and wake up inside it. Look around as if you just arrived.
  2. At dinner or on a call, drop the script you usually run with that person and ask something you actually want to know. Both of you have been half asleep in that conversation.
  3. When you catch yourself reacting the same tired way under stress, stop mid sentence and start again. Being caught dozing is not failure, it is the waking up.

Where in my ordinary day have I been asleep with my eyes open?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Most people live as if asleep, carried by habit, and the awake person walks among them. The difference is attention, not effort.

Sufism · Rumi

Do not spend your whole night asleep. Something is being offered while the house is dark, and only the awake receive it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You keep putting off being the person you mean to be, as if there were a later. Life goes on being lived while you wait.
