PROTESTANT

The reach runs past Israel to every people on earth, outsiders the first hearers kept at a distance. Teaching here carries the sense of apprenticing rather than giving a lesson, so making disciples takes years, not one conversation. What they carry is the message that Christ died and rose, and that sins are forgiven in his name.

The going is an order, backed by authority already granted. Baptism puts one name over a person, and the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit share it.

CATHOLIC

Catholic

One name is given, and three persons stand inside it. That single word carries the Christian belief that God is one and yet Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a shared life of love among three, and baptism lowers a person straight into that life.

Sending the message to all nations broke every boundary the first followers had grown up inside. No people, no language, no class sits outside the invitation, which is what the word catholic means, universal, open to everyone. Teaching is bound to the washing, so the Church owes every new Christian both the water and the years of instruction that follow.

ORTHODOX

Orthodox

One name held by three, singular and not three names, is the shape of God and the whole content of what gets handed on. The rest unfolds from that.

Baptism puts a person inside that shared life. Going under the water is a real death and a real rising, not a picture of one, so the nations are not enrolled in a philosophy but given a new birth. Teaching and baptizing belong together in that order, since no one should be plunged into a life nobody has explained to them. The doors stand open now to every people without exception.

Live Matthew 28:19 today

  1. Learn one thing slowly today instead of skimming ten. Read the same page twice, or sit with one line until it stops being new information.
  2. Stay with one person through something they are learning, a job, a language, sobriety, faith, for longer than it is interesting. Text them this week, not just today.
  3. When you want to end a hard conversation with the right answer, ask a second question instead. People are apprenticed, not corrected.

Who are you willing to walk with for years, not for a conversation?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · the Buddha's charge

He sent his first students out in all directions, telling them to teach for the good of all beings, no two of them to the same road. The teaching was not to be kept in the circle that received it.

Sufism · the way of the master

A seeker was bound to a teacher for years, sweeping the courtyard before learning a word. The point was never information. It was becoming the kind of person the teaching makes.

Confucian tradition · Analects

The master held that learning is a long apprenticeship, repeated daily until it becomes how a person moves. Nothing real is transferred in one sitting.
