Proverbs 13:10 Meaning Pride Only Breeds Quarrels

Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is with people who take advice.

What does Proverbs 13:10 mean?

Every quarrel begins in a single place, the mind's insistence that it stands apart and must defend its separate case. Pride is that insistence, and contention is only its outward noise, two minds each certain the threat lies in the other.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Every quarrel begins in a single place, the mind's insistence that it stands apart and must defend its separate case. Pride is that insistence, and contention is only its outward noise, two minds each certain the threat lies in the other. Where a mind is willing to be counselled by love, the whole basis of the fight dissolves, for there is nothing left to guard once separation is no longer believed. Wisdom is simply that willingness.

Conflict has one root, and it is inward. A mind that lets love advise it finds it had no true opponent at all.

The well advised: the mind open to love's counsel, which lays down its separate case and finds the quarrel gone.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Pride is the small self insisting it is right, needing the other person to be wrong. That need is where every quarrel begins. When someone must defend an image of themselves, they cannot hear anything, and so contention comes, exactly as pride guarantees it will.

The well advised are those no longer ruled by that anxious defending. Wisdom lives with them because the ego has loosened its grip and left room to listen. Winning the fight ends nothing. The quarrel dissolves the moment a person stops guarding who they think they are.

Māna: Conceit Conceit measures the self against others as better, worse, or equal. Breeding quarrels is all such measuring can do, since a measure needs a second person to come out shorter, and that person will answer back. Take the ruler away and the argument has nothing left to be about.

Diṭṭhupādāna: Clinging to views Clinging to views grips a position as private property. An opinion becomes property the moment pride takes hold of it, and after that any correction arrives as theft, which is why a quarrel swells far past the size of the point at issue. Someone holding a claim loosely can set it down when a better one comes along, and loses nothing in doing so.

Vivāda: Disputing Disputing is talk aimed at winning rather than seeing. Two people locked in it have stopped listening and are each waiting for a gap to speak into, so nothing new can enter from either side. Strife is the entire crop pride yields, and it keeps reseeding itself: every answer given to win invites the next one.

Sovacassatā: Being easy to speak to This names the capacity to take correction without hardening against the one giving it. Wisdom sits with such people not because they have more stored up, but because their door stays open when advice arrives, so the gaps in what they know keep getting filled. Anyone can receive praise; the test is the first second after being told you are wrong.

Kalyāṇamittatā: Good friendship Good friendship means keeping company with those who will tell you the truth. Advice has to come from somewhere, and pride steadily clears the room of everyone willing to offer it, until the proud man is left correct and alone. Wisdom is with people, plural, because it lives in the exchange itself: one willing to speak, another willing to receive.

  1. When your jaw tightens at something on your screen, a comment, a reply, an email, put the phone face down for a minute before you answer. Ask yourself honestly what you are protecting.
  2. In your next disagreement with someone close to you, say out loud that you might be wrong about part of it, and mean it. Watch how fast the heat drains out of the room.
  3. In a meeting where someone pushes back on your work, drop the need to win the point and get curious about theirs instead. You can hold your view without needing them to lose.

What would I have to stop defending for this fight to be over?

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not contend with anyone finds that no one can contend with them. Softness outlasts hardness because it offers nothing for force to push against.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Take away your opinion that you have been wronged and the sense of injury goes with it. The quarrel lived in the judgment, not in what the other person did.

Two monks argue about a flag moving in the wind. The teacher tells them neither the wind nor the flag moves, only their own minds, and the argument is over.
